Green Around the Gills AGAIN!

Picture from WunderPhotos

Winter is the time of many illnesses.  It has been for us this year.  Actually, we have been  struggling with one illness or injury after another in all seasons for many years.  It's tiring.  It wears you down.  It can lead to discouragement.

My son is hacking write now.  I think it's allergies.  He had to sit out of part of basketball practice today because he is still recovering from a long lingering stomach flu. But he doesn't have an injury at the moment so that is nice.  My daughter is absolutely miserable right now with another allergy attack.  She hasn't been in Irish dance lessons (her love) for over a year because of her health.

I'm sick half the time. But today, today, I woke up and I didn't feel sick.  I didn't feel draggy.  I didn't feel like I had 50 pounds of something weighing me down and making it hard to - to- move.  I felt good.  That is such a rare and wonderful treat for me.  I have learned from the past that feeling good today doesn't mean I am finally going to feel good most of the time like a normal person. It doesn't even mean I'll feel good tomorrow.  But I have learned just to be grateful for this day that I feel good and enjoy it.  I am so grateful for a day without that weight.

I am looking forward to the day when everyone in my family is well and uninjured all at the same time.  When that happens, I am going to count the days and see how long it lasts.  It doesn't usually last very long but I'll enjoy it while it does.

When my daughter gets discouraged, I tell her that God can work EVERYTHING out for our good - even these tenacious health issues.  We can't give up.  We can only live one day at a time and do the best we can with the health and energy that we have. And we hope, we really hope, that someday it will be better.

Lunar Eclipse 12/20/10

"Pre-eclipse Moon" by RNJoel from WunderPhotos

My Facebook Post:

"The lunar eclipse, beginning at 10:30 and the total eclipse beginning at 11:41, will cause the moon to look ruddy because of the light filtering through the earth's atmosphere. The moon should be in its deepest reddish shadow at 12:17 a.m. My family will be sitting outside in our lawn chairs to watch. (NOT)"

I think the fact that it is pouring rain right now (and has been the last two days and will be the next two days) is a valid reason to miss the eclipse.  Not that we would have gone to much trouble to see it anyway.  I do, however, think that a good eclipse, whether you can see it or not, is worth mentioning.

Let us consider it therefore, hereby mentioned.

And that's that.

Good Day, Sad Day

"Peaceful Valley" by JasonMac78 from WunderPhotos

Good: Kind friends who help take care of loose ends so you can attend a funeral.
Bad: Aching  for the loved ones left behind.
Good: Seeing the show of support from family and friends at the service.
Good: Seeing old friends.
Good: A young man now freed from a debilitating disease.
Bad: Grieving parents who will miss him dearly.
Good: The knowledge of a reunion in heaven.
Bad: Knowing the pain the parents will go through for a time.
Good: Knowing that God and time really do heal the brokenhearted.

A Very BLACK Friday

Our Black Friday began the night before, driving home in the BLACK of night after celebrating Thanksgiving out of town.  We were beat.  We had to get up early the next morning to take my boy to big fancy mall to perform with his band for three hours. Those BLACK Friday Christmas shoppers needed entertained.  I lay in bed that BLACK night going over in my mind all the boy would need for tomorrow's performance, (His first performance with the advanced band in formal attire): white dress shirt, BLACK pants, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

The next morning came pretty early.  We were actually on schedule to leave on time (a rarity for us) when my big strapping boy comes in the kitchen, 10 minutes before it's time to leave, and queried, "Doesn't the advanced band wear a BLACK dress shirt instead of a white one?" Panic strikes! I rush to pull up the e-mail that has the instructions for that day's performance.  He's right.  There are seven minutes left before we have to leave. Okay, options, what are our options?  Does he have a BLACK shirt he can use?  NO.  Does his dad have a BLACK shirt he can use?  NO. Do I?  Doesn't matter, he wouldn't wear it anyway.  "Mom, I don't have BLACK shoes anymore either." He comes out of his room wearing his BLACK pants. "Mom, these pants are too tight." I look.  Not only are they tight, they are too short.  When is this kid going to stop growing?

Well, at this point our two options are obvious.  1. Call the band director and tell him we can't make it.  2. Since the performance is a long one, buck up, call the band director, tell him our dilemma, rush to the store, and arrive as soon as we can.  We choose option two.  The band director is so great.  He laughs and tells us to get there when we can.  So off we go.

Go? Go where?  That's when it hit me.  We were about to go shopping for shoes and clothes, in a mad rush, on BLACK Friday!  I avoid the stores like the plague on that particular day of the year.  I hate crowds. Well, as ridiculous as it may sound, with visions of turmoil, and long lines, we (my husband, my son, and myself) dash off to the store.

First stop - Target. Miracle of miracles we find a shirt right off the bat.  Then I start looking for pants. I think I'm looking for a 36 " X 36". The store doesn't have them that long.  What?  Do I have to start shopping at a big and tall shop for this boy?  My pocketbook is starting to feel pained at the thought. We find a 36" X 34".  "Try these.  They'll have to do."  While I wait for the boy to change, my hubs goes off in search of shoes.  I begin to look around.  Hmm, there are definitely more people than there would usually be, but all in all, it wasn't too bad. I started to relax a little.  Hubs returns and says there are shoes in the shoe department he thinks will work.  The boy comes out. The waist is too big and they are definitely long enough. How can these be long enough and the ones at home be too short?  The boy says they will do.  Off we go tho the shoe department.  While the boy tries on the BLACK shoes, I try to solve the mystery of the pant lengths. (Envision light bulb turning on here.) "Boy (I really called him by his name), did you try on the pants I put in the dryer to wrinkle release or the pants that were in your room?" He answered. I said, "Those were the wrong pants!  I think the ones in the dryer still fit.  Do we buy these just in case or risk it?"  The shoes fit and we carry on the discussion as we make our way to the register. We buy one BLACK dress shirt and one pair of BLACK shoes and that's all. Guess what?  No waiting in line.  Not at all. I think Someone was watching out for us.

As we drive home my son says, "This day is an epic fail".  If I had a nickle for every time my boy said "epic", I would be a rich woman.  "Are you kidding me," I replied.  "This day is an epic save.  Do you realize we just found everything in one store when it could have easily taken three.  And do you realize we were in and out of that store in no time flat on BLACK Friday? It was more like an epic miracle."  Sometimes teenagers with little life experience and too many hormones just need help getting the right perspective.  And you KNOW what his response was, "Whatever."

We go home so the boy can change and get the pants that we really, really hope fit him.  Dad rushes off to the nearby music store to get the boy a new, badly needed, BLACK music stand. My boy finished changing.  You should have seen him. ( Wait, you will in the pictures at the end.)  He was so tall and handsome.  And everything fit fine.  No luck with the music stand.  He's been using an old, decrepit, silver stand for three years.  One more performance won't hurt.

Hubs drops us off at the mall and goes to park the car while the boy and I try to figure out where the band is playing. It's then we discover we are at the wrong mall and we should be at the larger mall across the street. My boy says again, "I can't believe what an epic fail this day is."  We needed another perspective check, "The only way this day would be a "fail" is if we gave up.  Mr. Hallman knows we're going to be late.  You're still going to have a good bit of time to play with your band.  As long as we don't give up, we haven't failed." "Mom, you're just too optimistic and unrealistic."  I think in my head, "Whatever."

My boy and I had quite a bit of a walk. We had to cross the street, go in the mall, ask four people for directions, go up two flights, and cross a bridge to get to the other section of the mall to FINALLY get to his band.  Now is the time I should let you know that my boy was still recuperating from a badly sprained ankle.  This was the first major walk he had since getting off of crutches.

The boy still has two hours he can play with the band. He (the tall guy on the left) prepares to join in.  Most of the band gets to sit but the trumpets stand. I was a little concerned about my son's ankle but a boy's gotta do what a boy's gotta do.

He made it and he is playing.  I'm so proud.  He and his friends were glad to see each other. Can you hear the Christmas music?

Here's the band in their BLACK attire.

Here's the band director with the great attitude doing his thing.  And who's that guy on the bench in the background?  I think I know him.  He looks like someone I married once. He bears an uncanny resemblance to my son.

This is my good friend, Lorrie, and a fellow band mom.  Our boys have known each other since they were babes.  And look, she's dressed all in BLACK from head to toe.

Another friend and band mom.  She is smiling because when she arrived earlier that morning it was freezing and her boy forgot his jacket.  But that's not why she's smiling.  She's smiling because when she went into the nearest big name department store to buy a jacket, she got a super BLACK Friday deal and paid $14 for a $70 jacket.

This is her boy's foot. He's a drummer. I took a picture of this because she pointed out that there was usually a drum in front of that peddle.  And even though there was not one now, her boy was pushing on the peddle out of habit. Kinda funny. I love this family.

During the two hour wait, my husband and I got to go to lunch.  It was almost like a date.

My boy and his buds goofing around and posing for the cameras afterward.

Yep, this day was an epic save.

Top o' the Mornin' to Ya

"Lighting Up The Clouds" by Ralfo from WonderPhotos

I just LOVE the world outside in the morning.  I don't necessarily like getting out of bed but I love mornings.  My brain (not my body, just my brain) is pretty active in the morning.  I think it's my most creative time of day.  So why do I try to do my blogging at night? At night: I'm tired, not nearly as positive thinking, and sometimes just plain 'ole cranky.  Alas, in the morning there are many responsibilities to be taken care of and limited time for doing "my" thing.  And, to my my dismay, there are other things I would like to be doing in those early hours also, such as taking my dog and myself for a walk.  What to do?  What to do?

Not enough time in the day or poor prioritizing?  It's neither.  Either there are not enough mornings or mornings are too short.  I would like to make a motion that mornings be lengthened and evenings be shortened.  Do I have a second on that?

I believe in creative problem solving, Sam

Relaxin' On A Rainy Saturday

"Before The Storm" by Sillygal from WunderPhotos

It's raining here in sunny SoCal.  That's a special treat.  I've been workin' hard and feel like I'm entitled to a little R&R.  Chiilin' and watchin' the rain on a Saturday is like being on vacation while you're still at home.

Hubs took my boy to a chess tournament today (That's secret code for, "My house is quiet".)  Hope my boy does well.

I made scrumpdilyicious apple muffins this morning, right after (Hang on!  I feel a run-on sentence coming on.) I finally found my son's dog who got left out in the rain and went under the house because I forgot to close off the crawl way after the repairman fixed a leak under out house yesterday. Anyway, she got lost in the maze under our house and couldn't find her way out.  I wasn't sure she was under there.  I thought she might be gone forever which resulted in a rush of unpleasant adrenaline.  Boy, was I glad to see her wet, muddy, very excited to be free body, coming out from under the house.  I rushed her directly to the tub - an hour before my alarm was set to go off.  Like I said earlier - like a vacation while you're still at home. ;)

I played around in Weather Underground today. I checked out the WunderPhotos.  I'm hooked. That's where the photos on this post came from.  I think WunderPhotos will become a new addiction.

Now I'm going to go play on my blogs and think about all the posts I want to write which may or may not ever happen.  Then I think I'll have to get around to a little house work. I have a pile of dirty laundry and dishes from not having hot water for a day or so.  But I feel a need to chill for at least another half hour before the noise, I mean my son, comes back home.

Hope you all have a wonderful day!

Too Tired to Blog?

Well, since this is the fifth post I've put on my blog this week, I have met my goal of 5 posts in one week.  I guess there's a first time for everything.

Today was quite a day.  Because it has been a little stressful around here lately, I took my kids out to breakfast - on a school day no less.  We're home schooled so I can do that.  It is a rare and special treat. It went downhill after that.

My boy did a job on his ankle over a week ago and got a 3rd class sprain.  It is still quite swollen.  Looks gross too.  He was in pain today and didn't get much work done which means we will have to cram before his next class. Not fun. I am getting more exercise waiting on him though as he can do practically nothing. It's pretty tough doing  anything on crutches.

My girl who, who has been working hard and getting A's in biology, freaked over the one chapter of chemistry in her book.  An hour of much explanation later, she still wasn't getting it.  We both decided it was best to put it aside and go to plan B tomorrow.  It is my job to figure out what plan B is.

I solved all my problems and went and got my hair cut.  I'm sure you understand how that is related to all of the above.

Well, I thought I was too tired to blog but look how much I wrote.  The lesson I learned from this is that if you think you are too tired to blog - DON'T!  You'll just end up complaining.  Spare your poor readers and just go to bed.

At least I can learn from my mistakes.  Thanks for listening, Sam

But that's okay, I know it will get better.

My Daughter's Bad Habit

Over the years my 17 year old has developed a bad habit. She doesn't bite her nails (my son does that) or leave the toilet lid up (that would be weird). She doesn't drink, smoke, chew or go with boys that do. But she does have a vice.

It all started when she was very young. It only started with tubes in her ears and then a minor eye surgery.

But it didn't stop there. She had to have tubes in her ears AGAIN and then have TWO more eye surgeries.

Sadly, she became addicted. Year before last she had to have a procedure done on her nose so she could breathe (Come on, what's the big deal about that!?).

Last year she had to have a slightly more aggressive procedure on her nose. (Enough is enough!)

And now ---I begged, I pleaded, but she just couldn't stop. Despite my plea, she is going to have all four wisdom teeth pulled - complete anesthesia and everything. (Couldn't she just have a hang nail removed or something?) Just because the wisdom teeth are pushing her other teeth out of alignment after two sets of braces and one tooth is growing sideways into her cheek instead of straight up, I mean, is that REALLY enough cause for another procedure? (Give me a break!)

Well, bright and early at 7:00 a.m. we will be at the orthodontist to do it all again. I sure hope she breaks this habit soon. It is getting expensive!!!

It really doesn't help when you have these crazy doctors enabling her. The ENT told her that if the problem ever came back and she had trouble breathing again, he could work on her nose yet again. (Isn't that malpractice or something?)

Do they have a 12 step program for people addicted to minor surgeries? We need some intervention here! HELP! Sam

Wow, It's Been Awhile!!!

Ummm, it's been a little while since my last post. Maybe there is a reason I haven't posted. Let me think....(This may take a while.).... Oh, I know, maybe I had writer's block. No, that's not it. I've thought of lots of things I would like to blog about. Maybe my computer broke or I lost internet or my house burned down. I don't think those are the reasons either. Well, maybe I've been busy. Hmmmm, what have I been doing? Let me go get my calendar. ***** I'm back. Let's take a look at this calendar. Let's see:

helped with a booth at a street fair (lost my boy for awhile)
several meetings
three days of CHEA convention
surprise visit of my sister from Tennessee
family gatherings
Bible study

Played the part of a taxi cab driver to:
regular band practices
marching band practice
two parades with the band
end of year band party
three basketball camps
youth group
knitting class
dance class
horse back riding lessons
dog agility classes
ministry opportunities
cooking classes
transporting my kids visitors

Medical:
one million doctor and orthodnic appointments
allergy shots
found out my daughter has high blood sugar (had to change a lot of my recipes to accomodate her)
found out I'm sensitive to wheat (I've been hungry)

Oh yea, and did I mention I had to clean the whole house and yard because I was silly enough to plan a surprise 50th birthday party for my husband at my house with over 50 people? It was Star Trek theme. People came in costumes and everything. It was really fun.

So I really can't say why I haven't been blogging. Nothing much has been happening. I guess I've been lazy. I'm sorry. I'll try to do better.

P.S. I know busy summers are not unique to me. What have you been up to and do you have any hints for keeping up with a blog when life gets busy?

Hope you're finding time to relax,
Love, Sam

They Were Only Trying to Help...

Well, in a previous post I told you about my little problem with lack of self-discipline when it came to putting a good fiction book down. Well, not only do my children know about it from life experience - they read my blog.

The next night sis comes into my room about bedtime and sees me reading. "Not again, mom. Come on, go to bed on time. I know you can do it!"

The night after that the boy comes in and sees me reading. A few minutes later I get up to get a cup of tea. The boy comes into the kitchen, "Mom, I hid your book. I'm only trying to help."

So, what was the last thing your kids "helped" you with?

I Miss My Busy Girl...

Sissy is always up to somethin' - in a good way. Learning something new on the computer, talking, e-mailing, talking, reading, talking. If she is doing something that leaves her hands free she is almost ALWAYS knitting. It is her new found love. But today she isn't chattering, she is coughing. She does say, "Mom, will you please come sit with your poor sick girl?" She watched movies all day. She would normally NEVER do that -- way too social. She doesn't even want her precious puppy, Pattycake, to lay with her. So she is laying on the couch, watching TV, without puppy, with idle hands. She isn't even knitting. I miss my busy girl. She has antibiotics. She'll be fine. I will know when she is better when I see those knitting needles whirring again. And it will make me smile.

I thought I could resist the temptation...

I thought I could resist the temptation......
All I wanted to do was relax a little before bed.

I
thought I could have a little fun and do a little work at the same time and read one of the historical fiction books I was considering having my son read for history class.

Well, it happened again, I was dead tired and instead of reading for one hour I sat up until 4:30 a.m. (I hate staying up late because it kills my next day) until I finished the book. I can say "NO" to chocolate, to dessert, to my children, but when it comes to reading fiction I have no self-control. When will I learn? I even asked my husband to hide a book for me at a decent hour one time and then later begged for it back. My daughter warned me when she saw what I was reading. But I thought I could handle it. Maybe I need a 12 step program for readers who don't know when to stop. The problem is ---I don't think I regret it enough. It was a very interesting book.

PS I am glad I was not in England when the Saxon's invaded.

PSS This is kind of boring for a third post but what do you expect from an old tired lady.

PSSS How worried do you need to be about punctuation and grammar in blogs? Is it casual? Is it like a published article so ya better get it right?
